Bergen Beach wasn’t always attached to the rest of Brooklyn. Into the early 1900s it was Bergen Island, a marsh-fringed island out in Jamaica Bay that only became part of the mainland after a bulkhead and landfill connected it to Mill Basin’s uplands around the time the Belt Parkway was built.
