Bergen Beach wasn’t always attached to the rest of Brooklyn. Into the early 1900s it was Bergen Island, a marsh-fringed island out in Jamaica Bay that only became part of the mainland after a bulkhead and landfill connected it to Mill Basin’s uplands around the time the Belt Parkway was built. That waterfront history still shapes the neighborhood today: it’s a low-density, largely one- and two-family-home community wrapped by Jamaica Bay and Mill Basin, with docks, small marinas, and Mill Harbor Condominiums, one of the only gated communities anywhere in New York City.

It’s also one of the more transit-isolated corners of Brooklyn, quite literally: there’s no subway station anywhere near Bergen Beach, only the B3, B41, and BM1 buses, and a widely cited 2014 transit study ranked it among the city’s neighborhoods farthest from a subway stop. That distance changes how people here get things fixed. When a laptop won’t boot or a small business’s network drops, “drop it off on the way to the train” isn’t really an option, so having a technician come to the house or storefront around Ave U, Ave N, or Ralph Avenue matters more than it would in a neighborhood built around a subway entrance.

The same landfill that built the neighborhood is still settling. Parts of Bergen Beach sit on reclaimed marshland that continues to subside, and street flooding after heavy rain or snowmelt is a documented, ongoing local issue. For homes and small offices near the water, that mix of flood exposure, dock and boat security, and a genuinely quiet, low-traffic street grid makes surge-protected equipment and camera coverage a practical decision rather than an upsell. Whether it’s a repair, a small business network build-out, or a monitored camera system for a waterfront property, our team works out of the Secure IT Global office on Avenue S in neighboring Marine Park, just across Ralph Avenue.
