Gravesend is one of the oldest surviving town plans in the United States. Lady Deborah Moody settled the area around 1643 and secured a formal land patent in 1645, laying out four fortified squares around a central green — a rational grid credited as one of the first planned town designs in North America, decades before Manhattan adopted its own street grid. Traces of that original layout are still visible in the neighborhood’s street pattern today, which makes Gravesend a genuinely different kind of place to work in than the newer, subdivided blocks closer to our Avenue S office.

The neighborhood built on that colonial foundation is now home to a large Syrian Jewish and broader Middle Eastern-American community alongside a long-established Italian-American population, visible in the synagogues, halal and kosher grocers, bakeries, and family-run storefronts along McDonald Avenue and Coney Island Avenue. Those two corridors, plus the elevated F train running above McDonald Avenue and the N train along the Sea Beach Line, keep Gravesend well connected to the rest of Brooklyn even though it sits a few miles south of our shop. It’s a neighborhood where a lot of business still gets done storefront to storefront, which is exactly the kind of client we’re used to working with.
